Australian Open 2026: Coco Gauff pushes into quarterfinals, Learner Tien upsets Daniil Medvedev

Coco Gauff has made some deep runs at the Australian Open in the past, but she's never won the event. This year could be different, though, as Gauff continued her push toward a her first-ever Australian Open title Sunday.

Gauff — ranked No. 3 — didn't have an easy task, as she needed to push past Karolína Muchová to get the job done. The No. 19 women's player did give Gauff some trouble during the match, but not enough to throw her off her game. Gauff picked up the win 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, taking down Muchová and pushing into the quarterfinal for the third-straight year.

The win bodes extremely well for Gauff, who has gone on to win every event in which she's beaten Muchová.

After some promising results at the Australian Open early in her career, Gauff has inched closer to winning the even in recent years. She was a semifinalist in 2024 and then reached the quarterfinals in 2025.

Getting back to the semifinals this time around will prove tough, as Gauff will take on Elina Svitolina on Tuesday. The two have played each other three times in the past, with Gauff picking up two wins in those meetings.

Svitolina upset Mirra Andreeva on Sunday to move into the quarterfinal round.

Learner Tien advances for U.S. on men's side

Learner Tien faced a tough task Sunday. With a win, Tien would advance to the Australian Open quarterfinal for the first time in his career. But that task wouldn't be easy, as he needed to defeat three-time finalist Daniil Medvedev to get there.

Tien proved up to the task, however, winning in straight sets (6-4, 6-0, 6-3) to take down the higher-ranked Medvedev. With the win, Tien became the youngest man to reach that Australian Open quarterfinal since 2015.

Zverev pushed past Francisco Cerundolo on Sunday. Elsewhere on the men's side, Alex de Minaur defeated Alexander Bublik to move into the quarterfinals.

GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany (AP) — Edin Džeko scored minutes after going on for his Schalke debut to help the team snatch a 2-2 draw with Kaiserslautern in Germany's second division on Sunday.

The 39-year-old Džeko, who joined Schalke in a surprise transfer from Italian team Fiorentina on Thursday, looked like being upstaged by another substitute, Ivan Prtajin, who scored twice after going on in the 61st for Kaiserslautern. Prtajin scored with his first touch – a header from a free kick – then made it 2-0 in the 84th on a counterattack.

But Džeko, who made his hugely anticipated entrance in the 67th, pulled one back with three minutes of normal time remaining and Kenan Karaman got the equalizer in the last minute.

Kaiserslautern coach Thorsten Lieberknecht berated his players on the field for letting their lead slip. The Red Devils dropped to sixth in the 18-team division.

It was Schalke's second consecutive draw, but the team remained top, two points ahead of Darmstadt after 19 rounds.

More than 1,000 Schalke fans turned up to see Džeko train on Friday, when he also signed autographs and posed for selfies.

Džeko, who will be 40 in March, became a star at Wolfsburg where he helped the team to the Bundesliga title in 2010. He also won titles with Manchester City (2012, 2014) and Inter Milan (2022, 2023).

In HBO's documentary *Mel Brooks: The 99 Year Old Man *(out Jan. 22), Dave Chappelle recalls spending time with Mel Brooks, who directed him in *Robin Hood: Men in Tights* — and though he's enjoyed a lovely relationship with the *Blazing Saddles* filmmaker, he didn't make a good first impression on his wife, Anne Bancroft.

"Sometimes he'd take me to lunch, and his old friend Carl Reiner was directing a movie on the next soundstage, and then at some point," Chappelle says, "the two of them started doing the '2000 Year Old Man,' the greatest comedy routine by two of the greatest comics, and me as the audience. I'll never forget it.'"

Chappelle doesn't treasure the memory of meeting Bancroft for the first time.

"Then I met his wife. She comes and says, 'Oh, Mel says so many wonderful things about you,'" Chappelle remembers. She goes on and on and gushes about how much she likes me."

Chappelle then attempted to cleverly respond with a not-so-subtle reference to *The Graduate*, Bancroft's most iconic movie project. " I go, 'Oh, you're not trying to seduce me, are you, Mrs. Robinson?'" he remembers. "Not thinking that she's heard that joke a million times. Nothing. Silence."

The comedian says that the only audible sound came from one of Chappelle's *Men in Tights* costars.

"All you could hear was Dom DeLuise's labored breath," he says. "That was really f---ing terrible and hilarious."

Bancroft was just 36 when she portrayed Mrs. Robinson, the older woman who has an affair with young college grad Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman), in 1967's *The Graduate*. She died at 73 in 2005 — which means she spent more than half of her life enduring *The Graduate* jokes.

Brooks and Bancroft met in 1961 during a rehearsal for Perry Como's variety show *Kraft Music Hall.* They married in 1964, and welcomed their only child together, *World War Z *author Max Brooks, in 1972.
