- Dave Chappelle worked with Mel Brooks on *Robin Hood: Men in Tights*.

- Brooks once introduced Chappelle to his wife, Anne Bancroft.

- Chappelle made a joke in reference to *The Graduate*, which Bancroft and Brooks did not find funny.

And here's to you, Mrs. Robinson.

In HBO's documentary *Mel Brooks: The 99 Year Old Man *(out Jan. 22), Dave Chappelle recalls spending time with Mel Brooks, who directed him in *Robin Hood: Men in Tights* — and though he's enjoyed a lovely relationship with the *Blazing Saddles* filmmaker, he didn't make a good first impression on his wife, Anne Bancroft.

"Sometimes he'd take me to lunch, and his old friend Carl Reiner was directing a movie on the next soundstage, and then at some point," Chappelle says, "the two of them started doing the '2000 Year Old Man,' the greatest comedy routine by two of the greatest comics, and me as the audience. I'll never forget it.'"

Chappelle doesn't treasure the memory of meeting Bancroft for the first time.

"Then I met his wife. She comes and says, 'Oh, Mel says so many wonderful things about you,'" Chappelle remembers. She goes on and on and gushes about how much she likes me."

Chappelle then attempted to cleverly respond with a not-so-subtle reference to *The Graduate*, Bancroft's most iconic movie project. " I go, 'Oh, you're not trying to seduce me, are you, Mrs. Robinson?'" he remembers. "Not thinking that she's heard that joke a million times. Nothing. Silence."

The comedian says that the only audible sound came from one of Chappelle's *Men in Tights* costars.

Bancroft was just 36 when she portrayed Mrs. Robinson, the older woman who has an affair with young college grad Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman), in 1967's *The Graduate*. She died at 73 in 2005 — which means she spent more than half of her life enduring *The Graduate* jokes.

Pedro Pascal is so good that even when he has nothing to do in a role, he makes an impression. Just ask Matt Damon.

Damon recalled recently on *The Howard Stern Show *his first impression of Pascal on the set of the 2011 sci-romance, *The Adjustment Bureau*.

"I've done cameos and things, and it's a very, very, very difficult thing to do," Damon said of being a day player on films during a joint appearance with Ben Affleck on Stern's SiriusXM show. "In fact, this is really interesting... I did a movie with Emily Blunt called *The Adjustment Bureau*, and we were shooting a scene in New York, and we came in, and there was this throwaway part of a maitre'd who sat us, and it got cut out of the movie."

He continued, "But I remember Emily and I went and sat down and this maitre'd walked way, and they cut, and we both looked at each other, and Em goes, 'That guy's really f---ing good.' And I said, 'Yeah, what the f---? That guy was really good. There was something just incredibly interesting, but real and natural…' And years later, I found out it was Pedro Pascal. Not even a day player with anything actually really to do. Just his presence, we both recognized it immediately. And it was Pedro."

In the film, which is loosely based on Philip K. Dick's 1954 short story "Adjustment Team," Damon plays David Norris, an ambitious young congressman who finds himself falling in love with Blunt's ballerina character, but mysterious forces work to keep them apart.

The memory of Pascal was spurred on when Stern brought up how Damon himself only had one line in the 1988 rom-com *Mystic Pizza*, a bit part that he beat Affleck for.

"When you got that one line in *Mystic Pizza*, when you're sitting at that dinner table, is it harder in a sense to deliver one line rather than a monologue," Stern asked Damon. "You were a young guy, you wanted to impress all these actors sitting at the table. And they give you one line. It's a line. And it's your big moment... Is it a horrible experience to have one line?"

"No," Damon told him. "I remember that as being... It was three nights of shooting, because it was a big dinner table scene, and there was a lot of coverage, and I just remember being so excited, feeling like *I can't believe that I'm here*. All the lights, the crew, the whole thing felt like... I knew I was where I wanted to be. I loved everything about it."

Nobody puts Baby in a corner — and no one should put Melora Hardin there either!

The star of *The Office*, *Transparent*, *27 Dresses*, *The Bold Type, *and, more recently, *Dancing With the Stars *sat down with * *for a career-spanning interview in which she touched on her time leading the cast of *Dirty Dancing*. Not the beloved, 1987 romantic classic starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, but the series adaptation that followed the year after, in which Hardin stepped into Grey's dancing shoes as Frances "Baby" Kellerman.

"It was so exciting," Hardin recalls. "I mean, Kenny Ortega was not *Kenny Ortega* back then. He wasn't the star that he is now, or the filmmaker that he'd become," she says of the *High School Musical *director who in 1988 was coming off a prolific run choreographing films like *Xanadu*, *St. Elmo's Fire*, and *Pretty in Pink *in the 1980s. Ortega also choreographed the *Dirty Dancing *film and was brought on to sketch out the moves for the series and ultimately directed two episodes.

"He was really a choreographer then, and he was just wonderful, so warm and so likable. So that was something amazing about the show, and we had a lot of fun," Hardin continues, but, asking if she can be honest, the star notes that there was something about the production experience that "was actually frustrating for me."

"I wasn't allowed to dance," Hardin reveals. Laughing, she elaborates, "Oh, yeah. I had to pretend I couldn't dance!"

Grey's Baby Houseman couldn't dance at the outset of the *Dirty Dancing *film, so neither could Hardin's Baby Kellerman. (In one of the series' few major alterations, Hardin's Baby became the daughter of resort owner Max Kellerman, not guest Jake Houseman, as in the film.) But unlike Grey, Hardin was a trained dancer, having taken ballet classes since the time she was a girl.

And it wasn't just *Dirty Dancing*.

"I couldn't tell you how many times," she says. "In *Diff'rent Strokes*, I had to pretend I couldn't dance. In *The Office*, I pretend I couldn't dance. Like, someone just let me!"****

With relief, Hardin allows that she was, over time, afforded opportunities that allowed her to showcase the full extent of her prowess as a dancer.

"I did get to do that on *Dancing With the Stars*, and as Roxy on Broadway [in *Chicago*]." Still, Hardin says she would "love to do a musical movie. I haven't gotten to do that yet, and I would love to be able to."

The *Dirty Dancing *TV series ended after just one season. It co-starred Patrick Cassidy of the renowned Cassidy show business family as the Johnny to Hardin's Baby, as well as *M*A*S*H *star McLean Stevenson as Baby's father, and future *Bridesmaids *director Paul Feig.

"Paul was one of my favorite actors on *Dirty Dancing*," Hardin recalls. "He was so much fun, just a great actor and a nice guy. We really liked each other, and they kind of built that into the show, because we just had such a nice rapport."

Feig also went on to direct Hardin in the infamous *Office *episode "Dinner Party." Reflecting on another iconic episode of the beloved workplace sitcom, the surreal "Threat Level Midnight," Hardin noted that "directors have to be there to support that and say, 'That's really landing, but let's go in this direction. And Paul was totally up for that, and able to play that way."

One of the many great aspects of comedy is that not everything will make you laugh the same way — and that's okay. Comedy is a highly subjective art form, and it can take many shapes, from goofy farces like *The Birdcage* (1995), to charming confections like *Moonstruck* (1987), to dark satires like *Heathers* (1989).

Amazon Prime Video has numerous comedy offerings free to watch with a subscription, including the aforementioned classics and newer genre-bending comedies like *Red, White & Royal Blue* (2023), *Totally Killer* (2023), and *My Old Ass* (2024). Whatever form of comedy you're in the mood for, Amazon likely has something for you.

Here are our picks for the 15 best comedies on Amazon Prime Video.

Afternoon Delight (2013)

Juno Temple as McKenna and Kathryn Hahn as Rachel in 'Afternoon Delight'

Kathryn Hahn is one of our finest actresses who specializes in stories of modern-day women going through deep internal struggles, and this quirky indie dramedy is no exception. Hahn plays Rachel, a stay-at-home mom growing increasingly frustrated by the monotony of her life. In an effort to spice things up, she goes with her husband to a strip club where she meets McKenna (Juno Temple), a dancer to whom she's drawn. She soon befriends McKenna, though Rachel's insecurities soon come out, leading to tension in their relationship. —*Kevin Jacobsen*

This engrossing black comedy, based on a wild true story, contains one of Jack Black's best performances. The actor stars as Bernie Tiede, a mortician's assistant who is treasured by his community thanks to his caring nature toward elderly widows. After befriending the irritable Marjorie Nugent (Shirley MacLaine), she persuades him to work for her full-time, where her demanding nature leads to Bernie eventually shooting her. —*K.J.*

The Birdcage (1996)

These birds have got quite a pedigree. Based on the 1978 film *La Cage aux Folles* (and, by proxy, the original 1973 French play), this adaptation was created by one of the greatest comedy teams of all time: director Mike Nichols and writer Elaine May. The story of a son returning to the roost with his fiancée and asking his gay dad (and stepdad) to pretend to be straight may sound a bit dated, but hear us out. Led by the superlative duo of Robin Williams and Nathan Lane, EW's critic points out that the idea of "a grown man asking his parents — a long-term, committed gay couple — to participate in such a self-loathing ruse borders on the fiendish. But that's not to say the couple in question aren't hilarious." —*Debby Wolfinsohn*

If you like your comedy with a side of tragedy, *The Big Sick* has got you covered. This is truly a unique, one-of-a-kind production: stomach-achingly hilarious, mega-touching, and…all true? Yep, written by the couple who went through it IRL (Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon) and acted by one (Nanjiani, with Gordon played by Zoe Kazan), the pair deftly turned her shocking diagnosis/near-death experience into true laughs. The best medicine? We think so. *—D.W.*

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm (2020)

Sascha Baron Cohen as Borat Sagdiyev in 'Borat Subsequent Moviefilm'

Sascha Baron Cohen as Borat Sagdiyev in 'Borat Subsequent Moviefilm'.

Exposing the worst of America in a fearless, laugh-while-you-cringe style is Sacha Baron Cohen's specialty. Disguising himself as a mustachioed, overly-confident Kazakh allowed Cohen a kind of magic access: the ability to travel into the dark corners of the U.S. as an "innocent." This ruse encouraged others to open up in ways they might not have otherwise, creating jaw-dropping moments of comedy (veering into tragedy) you can't look away from.

The setup is simple — Cohen's character Borat returns to the West with his daughter, Tutar (the excellent Maria Bakalova), to win the favor of its leader, "a magnificent new Premier named McDonald Trump." In a kind of bizarro buddy comedy, the two visit synagogues, debutante balls, and freedom rallies, creating moments so indelible they will go down in cinematic history. It's hard to choose just one, so we'll pick two: Rudy Giuliani, and the horrifying father-daughter OB-GYN visit. As EW's critic writes, "his outrageous, uncountable isms — the confident screeds against women and Jew[ish people], the casual endorsements of incest or indentured servitude — are of course satirical, and entirely the point." *—D.W.*

Brittany Runs a Marathon (2019)

Jillian Bell as Brittany Forgler in 'Brittany Runs a Marathon'

Jillian Bell as Brittany Forgler in 'Brittany Runs a Marathon'.

Jillian Bell stars as Brittany, a New York party girl who decides to change her life the old-fashioned way: jogging! EW's critic says Bell brings a "real, messy humanity to Brittany that comedies hardly ever allow a lead character — let alone a non-impossibly-bodied female — to have." Kept afloat by her running buddies — Michaela Watkins' divorcée with issues and Micah Stock's sardonic gay dad — the movie avoids a simple happy ending but *does* provide a satisfying, uplifting one. It's perfect for watching on the treadmill or stationary bike (or lying in bed eating ice cream). *—D.W.*

The ruthless nature of high school is as contentious and nasty as real-world politics, as this satirical comedy proves. The film follows a history teacher (Matthew Broderick) who tries to sabotage highly ambitious student Tracy Flick (Reese Witherspoon) — whom he dislikes for various reasons — from winning the upcoming student government presidential election. Veronica (Winona Ryder) is a teen who gets involved with the popular mean-girl clique at her high school, known as the Heathers. She also befriends the mysterious new student, J.D. (Christian Slater), a loner whose idea of revenge involves murder staged as a suicide and orchestrating a disturbing plan to get back at the Heathers for their cruelty. On paper, a plot description for this seminal cult classic sounds far from funny. But the film's heightened tone and memorable one-liners ("Dear diary, my teen angst bulls--- has a body count") make for a darkly entertaining answer to the formulaic '80s teen comedies that came before it, while still holding up today. —*K.J.*

This is a coming-of-age story, one with valuable lessons to impart about our relationship to ourselves and the value of living in the present. Based on Casey McQuiston's best-selling novel of the same name, *Red, White & Royal Blue* is a charming romantic comedy that charts the unlikely romance between a British prince and the son of the president of the United States. In a classic tale of enemies-to-lovers, American Alex (Taylor Zakhar Perez) has a feud with Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine), which escalates to a rather unfortunate cake accident (pictured above). Following the subsequent tabloid scandal, the pair eventually make amends and come to realize their feelings for each other, which blossoms into an affair.

It's a frothy good time with two star-making performances at its center; it also happens to feature Uma Thurman in what may be her campiest performance since 1997's *Batman & Robin*. (Some good news: We're getting a sequel!) —*K.J.*

Regarded by the American Film Institute as the best comedy of all time, *Some Like It Hot* has become such a lauded film that it could fall victim to overhype for modern audiences. And yet, when you watch this Billy Wilder farce, its genius instantly reveals itself as it tells the story of two men who witness a mob murder and proceed to disguise themselves as women and flee on a bus to Miami. Along the way, they meet the glamorous Sugar (Marilyn Monroe), who believes them to be women, and a series of misunderstandings and complications ensue from there. It all leads to one of the best punchline endings in film history. —*K.J.*

*Totally Killer* boasts four major cinematic selling points guaranteed to make a horror fan happy: a 1980s setting, serial killers, a Halloween night theme, and time travel. Not to say *Totally Killer *doesn't take a fresh approach, because it totally does.* *Here, we meet teenage girl Jamie (Kiernan Shipka), who goes back to 1987 to save her mom's friends from being murdered (as you do). Smartly referencing the Best Movies of All Time (*Back to the Future*, *Scream*, etc.), *Totally Killer* joins a long line of genre flicks led by kick-ass heroines. *—D.W.*
