At the 2026 Met Gala, where the museum’s spring exhibit “Costume Art” explores the very idea of the “dressed body,” the red carpet told an entirely different story. Instead, it was the undressed body—or the nearly-naked, strategically adorned version of it—that took center stage.

While naked dressing has long been a hallmark of the “first Monday in May”—from Cher’s bejeweled Bob Mackie in 1972 to Beyoncé’s landmark mesh Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci dress from 2015—this year, the risqué style of dress felt especially on theme. The gala’s broad dress code “Fashion Is Art” invited guests to literally turn themselves into walking canvases. And while many channeled painterly techniques, others turned themselves—and their bodies—into wearable works of art.

Take Kendall Jenner. The model wore a custom GapStudio T-shirt dress by Zac Posen with an exposed bra and tiered draping to mimic stonework—a creation that nodded to the Greek statue “The Winged Victory of Samothrace.” Then there was Kylie Jenner, with bleached “naked” eyebrows to match, in a skin-toned Schiaparelli nude look with a nipple-baring bustier. Zoë Kravitz, who is no stranger to naked dressing at the Met Gala, wore a black lace Saint Laurent dress complete with padded hips. And Doja Cat’s latex look got even riskier as she removed it to unveil a fully see-through dress once inside the museum. Arguably, the evening’s most daring dresser was Tyla, who dazzled in a daringly low-slung teal dress by Valentino with crystal strands fashioned into a bodice.
